Governing Council

Annual General Meeting (AGM)
is on Wednesday 2nd April 2025
at 6:30pm in the Staffroom

Dear parents/caregivers

Woodend School Governing Council is seeking parents and caregivers to join as parent representatives. There are parent/caregiver vacancies and nominations are now open.

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) is on Wednesday 2nd April 2025 at 6:30pm, to be held at Woodend Primary School, in the staffroom. The AGM is the meeting where governing council nominations are declared. All positions available are for a two year period.

There are many functions of the governing council performed throughout the school year. Some of these include:

  • providing a focus for involvement of the school community in the governance of the school (this includes recommendations via various sub-committees eg sport)
  • ensuring the cultural and social diversity of the community is considered, and particular needs are appropriately identified
  • strategic planning for the school
  • ratification of local policies for the school (eg Healthy Eating Policy)
  • determining the deployment of financial resources available to the school through budget preparation and review (via the mandated Finance Advisory Committee)
  • present, plan and report on the council’s operations to the school community and minister (via the Annual Report)

Meetings are held twice a term, in the evening. There is also opportunity for parents and caregivers to be part of subcommittees such as Finance Advisory Committee, Sport, Healthy Eating, Grounds et al.

Any parent/caregiver who nominates to be a member of the governing council must:

  • have a current Working with Children Check (WWCC). The school can assist with this process
  • have a completed Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect – Education and Care (RRHAN-EC) training (formerly RAN-EC). Certificate must be current. The school can assist with information on how to access the training

The School Governance Administrative Instruction contains the administrative instructions issued by the Chief Executive, Department for Education that apply to all governing councils and affiliated committees.

These mandatory Instructions provide principals, governing councils and affiliated committees with the operational direction required to facilitate good governance and local decision-making arrangements and to ensure schools comply with their obligations under the Education and Children’s Services Act 2019 (the Act), (see page 42 for limitations of Governing Councils according to The Act), Education and Children’s Services Regulations 2020 (the regulations), and other key legislative and departmental requirements.
