This morning all Reception classrooms participated in an incursion with Walking Together with Kaurna – Cultural Experiences for Children.
The incursion presented a thought provoking and comprehensive Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learning experience; presented by Drew, a Kaurna and Ngarrindjeri man, and Liesl, a Non-Indigenous Australian early years educator with a passion for historical Australian truth telling, and reconciliation. Drew and Liesl both shared information with the children through both lenses of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians.
Drew shared artefacts with the children, including shields, spears, possum (pirlta) and red kangaroo (tarnta) skins, woven baskets, and “yukus”, wooden baskets that are used for a range of purposes. Drew taught about the importance of taking care of Country, using the land to take care of us, and in return the respect that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have for Country by making sure they are always equally giving back to Country.
Liesl shared her knowledge and passion of the importance of reconciliation and coming together to learn the truth about Australia’s history. Liesl used oral story telling with props to tell the story and show the impact of colonisation on Australia’s environment, the Stolen Generation and Terra Nullius.
A wonderful, educative experience for all!
