On Friday 8 May, the Year 3/4 classes (Rooms 24, 25, 7 and 8) visited the Living Kaurna Cultural Centre for a rich and engaging cultural experience.
Students were welcomed with a smoking ceremony, where many chose to breathe in the fragrant herbs as part of the tradition. Auntie Janice guided students through the art of weaving. While some found the process challenging, most enjoyed the activity and demonstrated great persistence and resilience.
Uncle Belly and Keneatha then led students on a guided walk through the grounds of Warriparinga. Students were captivated by Uncle Belly’s retelling of the Dreaming story of Tjilbruke and were shown the striking sculpture marking the places where Tjilbruke stopped and cried for his nephew.
The sculptures of native animals captured the students’ imaginations, particularly the kookaburra, wombat, yabby and frogs. For many, the highlight of the excursion was seeing a 10,000-year-old underground oven.
The message to “tread softly” resonated strongly with students, encouraging them to care for the natural environment and remain open to learning about the oldest living culture, right on our doorstep. It was a valuable and memorable experience for all involved.
