On Wednesday 8 of our students took part in the annual Southern District Hiragana Reading Competition, held at Reynella East College.

It was a highly sort after position and after lunch time try outs the 2 teams were chosen to take part in the event.

Along with 22 other teams, our 2 teams, Woodend Wizards and Woodend Hiragana Heroes, competed in the first round where students have to read single hiragana characters. Judging of these rounds was full of pressure as the students were very competitive and there were many hikiwake (draw) moments, resulting in rematches.

Both our teams successfully made it to the second round of 12 teams. This round was made up of 2 character words. This was a knock out competition. Our team, the Hiragana Heroes, worked hard and made it through to the championship round, competing against 2 other schools.

The competition during this round was intense and our students kept their cool, doing an excellent job at reading 4 character words. After a round against both the schools, we successfully took out first place.

This now means the students will compete at the Sate Competition early Term 4.

Both teams should be extremely proud of their achievements and how they represented Woodend.
