On Friday, June 12th, eight of our Year 6 students took part in the annual Southern District Hiragana Reading Competition, held at Reynella East College.
Woodend had 2 teams taking part in the event. These 8 students worked hard in the lead up to the compeition, giving up their lunchtimes to practice as well as working on building their quick recall at home.
Along with 23 other teams, our 2 teams, Woodend wa sugoi (Woodend is super) and Woodend Warriors, competed in the first round where students have to read single hiragana characters, competing against 5 other teams in a round robin style competition. Judging of these rounds was full of pressure as the students were very competitive. Both of our teams held their own and were accurate and fast, giving them both a top 2 placing in their groupings.
This took them through to the Top 8 and the finals which were knockout style rounds. The first of the finals round was made up of 2 character words.
The competition was very high this year and unfortunately our teams was knocked out at this point.
Both teams should be extremely proud of their achievements and how they represented Woodend. They held their own, showing excellent hiragana knowledge as well as excellent sportsmanship and encouragement of others.
