Last Friday, our Midyear Reception students had an incursion with Cleanaway. This incursion focused on teaching students about the importance of waste management and recycling, issues that are becoming increasingly important in our everyday lives. Throughout the session, students took part in a variety of activities which helped them understand the journey of waste once it leaves our homes and classrooms. They were shown how to separate different types of rubbish into the correct bins, including general waste, recycling, and organics.

One of the key lessons from the incursion was about making responsible choices when it comes to disposing of waste, both at home and at school. Students were encouraged to think about ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle, and learnt how small actions can make a big difference to the environment. They discussed why recycling is important, what materials can and cannot be recycled, and how to minimise waste in their daily lives.

The presenter shared real-life examples and stories about the impact of rubbish on our environment, which helped the students connect to the topic on a personal level, including using battery bins to dispose of batteries and how to use our classroom compost caddies. By the end of the session, our students had gained valuable knowledge and skills to help them form positive, lifelong habits for caring for the environment. Theym developed a greater sense of responsibility for waste and recycling, not only within our school grounds but also in their homes and wider communities.

The incursion was a fantastic way to reinforce the importance of making environmentally friendly choices and inspired many students to become more active in looking after our planet.

We thank Cleanaway for delivering such a meaningful and practical learning experience. We look forward to continuing our journey towards greater sustainability as a school community! Here are some quotes by the children:

“Roses go in the green bin.” – Skye

“Don’t put batteries in house bins because it could cause a bin truck fire.” – Emily

“Nappies go in the red bin.” – Shourya

“Hoses go in the red bin.” – Tyler

“Meat goes in the green bin.”
