Many thanks to families for your support of Pyjama Day today. $615 was raised towards our new playground and approximately 200 students enjoyed the opportunity to relax in the hall at recess or lunch time to enjoy some short movies.
Most classes have had a conversation about sleep. Our Wellbeing and Engagement data in 2023 showed that only 51% of students were getting a good nights sleep. The Student Representative Council has been working on ways to help our school learn more about the importance of sleep. We decided to raise awareness about sleep because it has a huge impact on learning at school and even everyday activities. In 2024, our data shows a significant improvement with 67% of students getting a good nights sleep. We would like to see a greater improvement in this in 2025.
Some of the key ideas from class discussions today:
- 6 – 12 year olds need 9-12 hours of sleep each night
- Sleep gives us the energy we need for the day
- Our brain stores away new learning while we sleep. We think more clearly, form long term memories and do better at school.
- Our muscles and body recover while we sleep, keeping us healthy
- Sets us up for a good day. Sleep helps our mood so we can get along better with others
- A good bedtime routine prepares the brain to know it is time to go to sleep
Things we can include in a bedtime routine that will help:
- Start the routine half an hour to an hour before bed
- Have a warm bath
- Do something relaxing – read a book, play a boardgame, do craft
- Avoid bright lights
- No devices close to bedtime
- Foods that can help us with sleep include warm milk, bananas and nuts
