Dear Parents and Caregivers,
We are set to begin the class placement process in preparation for the 2026 school year. This is a complex task involving teachers and the school leadership team to place each child in a learning environment that supports them to be successful.
As part of the process for establishing classes for 2026, parents and caregivers may wish to share any important information they believe should be considered in the placement of their child/children. This should be information the school or current class teacher may not already know – most parents will not need to respond.
This information should be submitted in writing by email to kerri.bruggemann369@schools.sa.edu.au
Information will only be considered if it is in writing and received no later than the close of business on Friday, 24 October (Week 2).
Please mark it: Attention: Principal – Class Placement
Please note that:
-
Current teachers will be viewing parent input as part of the class placement process.
-
Students will provide information about social groupings with the support of their teacher. Friendships are one of many factors considered in the placement process.
-
Requests regarding a specific teacher will not be considered in the placement process. Teachers and school leadership are in the best position to place students according to the factors previously outlined.
-
The class placement process is thorough. Teachers and leaders factor in their knowledge of each child and how they engage in learning and interact with others to make balanced decisions. For reasons of privacy and confidentiality, we are not able to share with parents and caregivers the reasons for some placements.
-
We expect class placements to be completed by the end of Week 8, with information going home to families in Week 9 (the last week of the school term). Staff members will not disclose the composition of proposed classes prior to this formal announcement.
It is the responsibility of the Principal to make the final decision on classes and the placement of students. Rest assured, a great deal of thought, planning and time goes into forming new classes each year.
We respectfully ask that you trust our school in making these important decisions.
Yours sincerely,
Woodend Leadership Team
Understanding How Placements Are Made
Student Placement and Class Structure for 2026
When planning classes for next year, we take into account many factors, including each child’s learning progress, social and emotional needs, behaviour, gender balance, friendships, and any special requirements. Teacher, student, and parent input all help us make informed decisions to create balanced and supportive class groups.
Class structures are shaped by overall enrolments, the number of students in each year level, our new Reception intake, school resources, and staffing – which is usually confirmed at the end of the year. Both straight year-level and composite (multi-age) classes will be formed to best meet the needs of all students. Research by John Hattie shows that composite classes do not impact student achievement. At Woodend, our teachers work collaboratively across year levels to plan, differentiate, and assess learning for all students.
Friendships
Students will soon complete a confidential friendship survey, nominating up to five peers they would like to learn with next year. While we aim to place each child with at least one nominated peer, our first priority is creating the best possible class for each learner’s growth and wellbeing.
Friendships often change from year to year, and we encourage students to build new connections – a valuable life skill that fosters confidence and resilience. Friendships across classes and year levels are also encouraged during play times and beyond the school day.
