At Woodend Primary School, we are committed to supporting every student’s success by meeting their individual academic, social, and emotional needs. Our caring and skilled School Services Officers (SSOs) work closely with teachers to provide classroom, small group and one-on-one support, making sure all children have the opportunity to thrive in an inclusive environment.

Key Features of Learning Support at Woodend:

Leadership Team: Christina Munro (Autism Inclusion (AIT)/Learning Support Teacher), Cathie Luke (Senior Leader), and Jane-Ann Natar (Deputy Principal), meet weekly to discuss and plan support for students and oversee our intervention programs. This team identifies and allocates support through thorough examination of data, in line with school priorities and need.

Support in the Classroom: Our SSOs, under the guidance of teachers, help students who have learning difficulties, disabilities, or behavioural challenges. This support helps ensure that all students can participate in learning alongside their peers.

Inclusive Strategies: Where possible, we provide support in the general classroom to help students develop friendships and take part in all activities. Support is offered for a range of needs, including communication and interaction (such as autism), cognitive needs (like dyslexia or dyscalculia), and social or emotional wellbeing (like ADHD).

Literacy and Numeracy Programs: We focus on providing early support (especially in Reception to Year 2). Identified students requiring additional support for reading, writing, or maths, are supported through targeted, evidence-based programs in small groups. These programs use structured lessons and hands-on activities to build confidence and skills.

Social Skills Groups: This year, we are excited to introduce social skills groups for students who would benefit from learning and practising social skills in a small, supportive setting. A fun, game-based program, give students opportunities to learn and practise important skills for getting along with others, making friends, and working together.

Working Together: We encourage parents and guardians to stay in contact with teachers, set realistic goals together, and keep updated on your child’s progress.

Neurodivergent Families of WPS Facebook Group: This group is a supportive space where families can share experiences, resources, and ideas, as well as keep up to date with relevant information and events at Woodend Primary School. Whether your child is diagnosed, seeking support, or youโ€™re simply interested in learning more about neurodiversity, we invite you to join our group. Our aim is to create a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone.

If you have any questions about learning support at Woodend, please contact us, we are here to help.
