At Woodend Primary School, we believe that student voice matters. The benefits of listening to and acting on student voice at Woodend include:
- increasing student’s engagement in learning, including learning that may be messy, challenging and stretch us
- encouraging collaboration between students and their teachers
- creating and maintaining a positive environment where a growth mindset is modelled and promoted and stretch thinking is embraced
- developing personal and social capabilities.
This year we have nine team members in our Student Voice In Learning (SVIL) team. These students wrote an application based on a set of criteria linked to SVIL and a panel of students and staff met to determine suitable applicants for the positions. We congratulate the following students for their selection:
- Emily
- Jacqui
- Alyssa
- Stella
- Ollie
- Sophie
- Cleo
- Keira
- Alexis
We meet fortnightly to make decisions about student voice and the impact we can have with students’ growth mindset and stretch thinking. We have developed our theory of change at Woodend and this is:
For students at Woodend Primary School to embrace a growth mindset to unlock stretch thinking and accept a challenge. We want students at Woodend to be prepared to go into the learning pit and share their thinking with others.
The team have developed a plan of how they can make a difference across our classrooms and community . We will undergo training to better understand our role and the importance of student voice as it relates to growth mindset and stretch thinking. We then embark on training students from Years 3 – 6 classes on how to observe a growth mindset and stretch thinking and provide feedback to class members to help them move forward with their learning.
The team are excited to see change happening for students and their learning across classrooms. We look forward to sharing our developments with you throughout the year.
