On Wednesday, 6th August, eight of our Year 6 students took part in the annual Southern District Hiragana Reading Competition, held at Reynella East College.

It was a highly sort after position and after lunch time try outs, the 2 teams were chosen to take part in the event.

Along with twenty two other teams, our two teams, Woodend Wasabi and Woodend Wolves competed in the first round where students have to read single hiragana characters. Judging of these rounds was full of pressure as the students were very competitive and there were many hikiwake (draw) moments, resulting in rematches.

One of our teams successfully made it to the second round of twelve teams. This round was made up of 2 character words. This was a knockout competition. The Woodend wasabi team successfully got through to the next round of 3 character words.

The competition was very high this year and unfortunately our team was knocked out at this point.

Both teams should be extremely proud of their achievements and how they represented Woodend. They held their own, showing excellent sportsmanship and encouragement of others.
