FAMILY ENGAGEMENT: Ideas for Science & Technology Expo …

by | Aug 25, 2016

What  science and technology  project or activity could you be  working on with your child, for inclusion in our Family Science and Technology Expo on 21 October. We would love everyone to have a go!  There should always be time for  hands on learning.

Here are some ideas:

  • Collections: Could you create collections?  For example:
    • rocks, crystals, minerals
    • insects, butterflies and moths, beetles, feathers
    • soils of different type, shells,
    • textures, coloured fabrics
    • plant leaves, seed pods
    • photos or impressions of animal tracks
  • Constructions: Could you build something together?
    •  different types of bridges, pulley systems,
    • tallest structures out of newspaper
    • vehicles big and small…  can they move?
    • use electronics kits to create a range of devices
    • build a remote controlled vehicle
    • build models out of lego, mechano etc
    • larger things like bikes and  games
    • kites, gliders
    • musical instruments
  • Chain reactions: lines of dominoes could be just the beginning.  Think about ramps and levers and wheels and different types of balls.  There are  really amazing fun things on youtube.   Make it as simple or as complex as you like.

    • how do do different surfaces  affect a rolling marble?
    • how does light affect  plant growth?
    • using a battery and bulb explore what materials conduct electricity.
    • how does insulation affect the temperature if a liquid?
    • how could we compare the strength of  magnets?
    • how could we measure how hard a rock is?
    • do things float differently in different liquids?

  • Displays and Models
    • research things that are of interest
    • make a model to show how  life cycles work,  create a water cycle. What about a carbon cycle?
    • create spheres of  the planets and the sun to scale
    • show how blood works
    • make a model of a brain, a heart, a lung … a submarine… a guitar
