Environmental Update: Student Leadership, Community Projects and School Upgrades

by | Jun 16, 2023

Woodend has been abuzz with various environmental projects taking place in the past few weeks.

Youth Environmental Leaders Project

Our SRC Leadership team have again been invited to join the Green Adelaide Youth Environmental Leaders Program. This program offers ongoing support from a Green Adelaide Education Officer to help students grow their leadership, public speaking, and communication skills while planning and executing an environmental project of their choice. At the end of the year, the students present their project to other schools in the program.

On June 6th, our leaders attended their first sustainability workshop at Old Noarlunga Primary School. They actively participated in project planning and environmental education activities alongside other schools in the program and explored the nearby conservation area.

While still in the early stages, our students are planning to transform an underutilised play space on the oval into an engaging and playful pollinator garden. We look forward to this project evolving in the coming terms.

If you have any ideas, skills, or resources that you believe may be helpful to this project, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Working Bee and Street Upgrade

Our Grounds Committee continues to make progress on our “street” upgrade, which includes the introduction of native grasses, stepping stones, and additional sitting and playing areas for students. The Working Bee held last Friday was a resounding success, with over 100 plants planted, 30 stepping stones positioned, and the installation of a functional market stall!

The market stand was inspired by ideas shared by Room 1 in 2022 and designed by our year 6 students. We extend our gratitude to Andy, a parent and volunteer, for bringing this concept to life.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the parents, staff, and friends who assisted on the day. Your contributions to our school are greatly appreciated and will have a lasting impact. We would also like to acknowledge Scott at Big Buy Garden Centre in Old Reynella for his generous donation towards our project, as well as all the families and friends who contributed to the Colour Run in 2022 as some of the funds raised have been allocated to support this initiative.

Field River Regeneration Project – Planting & Education

This week, rooms 1, 2, 9, and 10 participated in a planting and education program at the Field River regeneration site in Sheidow Park, locally known as the Quarry or Gully. The Upper Field River area is currently undergoing environmental restoration efforts to activate, restore and rewild the area. These initiatives include riverbank restoration through weeding, site surveys to better understand the environmental and cultural significance of the area, planting native species, and raising awareness about the ecology and cultural heritage of the region. Green Adelaide, along with other stakeholders, are working diligently to enhance one of Adelaide’s last remaining large urban open spaces.

We are fortunate to have this valuable resource right on our doorstep, and we encourage you to take the time to explore this area and observe the positive changes taking place. The site is easily accessible, including via the eastern end of Woodend Road.
