Harmony Week is a wonderful time, celebrated across Australia each year, where we come together to recognise and embrace the rich diversity within our community. It is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of inclusivity, respect, and making everyone feel they truly belong, no matter their cultural or linguistic background. At the heart of Harmony Week is the simple but powerful message that “everyone belongs”.
Celebrations at Woodend will begin on Wednesday, 18 March, with a Harmony Week Assembly hosted by Miss Murphy’s and Miss Boys’ classes. As always, families and friends of Woodend are warmly invited to attend this assembly.
On Monday, 23 March, all classes will come together to celebrate Harmony Week with a dress-up day, parade, and picnic. This special occasion also coincides with welcoming our exchange students from Myojo Gakuen Elementary in Tokyo, marking another chapter in our long-standing, deeply valued relationship.
On this day, all students are invited to wear orange, the official colour of Harmony Week, or items of cultural significance to honour their heritage. At 10:00am, we will gather for a short assembly to welcome our visitors from Japan. During the day, our Reception, Year 1, and Year 2 students will parade their fantastic Harmony Week creations, sharing messages of unity and celebrating the many cultures that make up our wonderful school community. This parade will be recorded for families to view. All classes will then gather on the oval to enjoy lunch together with our Japanese guests.
Harmony Week is a powerful reminder that “everyone belongs” and a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the connections that unite us, both locally and globally.
