Dear families,

Thank you for the amazing way you have supported our school throughout the year. It is always wonderful to see how, together as a team, we support our young people—not only as part of their learning journey, but as they grow towards their teenage years and beyond.

Monday evening’s special celebration, culminating in an incredible fireworks display, was testament to the strength of our community. The commitment of families, the dedication of our staff in providing rich opportunities, and the joy with which students embrace these experiences all contribute to lasting memories and deep learning.

This week will be busy and exciting as we prepare for the graduation of our 84 Year Six students who are about to take the next big step into high school. They have worked extremely hard to be ready for this transition. Only just over a week ago, I visited Seaview High School and spoke with teachers about our students—they were overwhelmingly positive about the preparation and grounding our students receive at Woodend. This reflects the wonderful work of both our teachers and our students.

At this time of year, we also think back fondly to the little Receptions who started with us in Term 1, and those who joined mid-year. They have all come so far and are now ready to move confidently into 2026—either as Year One students or continuing their Reception year with enthusiasm and growing independence.

We are currently finalising enrolments for 2026. While we still have some places available, numbers are limited at certain year levels. If you know anyone intending to seek enrolment who has not yet done so, we encourage them to make contact as soon as possible.

In 2026, we look forward to welcoming all new students joining our community for the first time.

I would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our teachers and School Service Officers for their outstanding work across the year. Their commitment ensures strong support programs for those students who need them, while also providing rich learning opportunities for every student. Whether it is working in our garden, attending camps and excursions, participating in Pedal Prix, learning an instrument, performing in our musical, joining choir or the performance team, engaging in SAPSASA events, or exploring STEM activities and exhibitions—our students experience so much because of the dedication of our staff.

To the families who may be leaving us—whether for new employment opportunities or other personal reasons—we wish you all the very best as you begin the next part of your journey. We are fortunate to live in a country with such a diverse range of places to call home, and we hope your new chapter is filled with success and happiness.

Looking ahead, 2026 promises to be another exciting year. We will once again welcome 25 students from Myojo Gakuen in March, and I thank the families who have generously taken on homestay responsibilities to support this program. This will also be the year we take a group of Woodend students to Japan, where they will experience their own homestay and immerse themselves in Japanese culture—an extraordinary opportunity to broaden their perspectives and deepen their global understanding.

On behalf of all staff at Woodend, I wish you a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year. We look forward to welcoming you back in 2026.

Warm regards,
Steve Freeman
Principal
