Hello my name is Asmitha, I am 25 years of age, born in Bangalore, which is located south of India.
A little history about myself, I attended primary school at the School of the Nativity at Aberfoyle Park, later my middle Schooling was done at Marymount College, finally completing my High school at Sacred Heart Senior College. Ever since I remember, I have always been fascinated at the way our mind works, this curiosity led me to take up an undergraduate degree in the Bachelor of Psychological Sciences, majoring in Human Neuroscience, which I successfully completed at the end of 2018, with the University of Adelaide. Now I am currently enrolled in my Masters program of Counselling Practice at Tabor College.
Apart from education and working on my career, I enjoy spending time with my lovely parents and my beautiful Sister. I find art and painting helps me to relax. I take advantage of our beaches by going on walks, and hiking through to the refreshing waterfalls. Quality time with family and friends is highly valued, where we usually enjoy cooking, travelling, exploring and just watching a good movie/ episodes of F.R.I.E.N.D.S.
My past experiences in both Customer services and my volunteer role at my local church, has assisted me in understanding the worth of working with people. Being involved in a children’s program at church for 4-5 years has enlightened my views on the values of working with children. Allowing myself to be aware of the importance in providing a safe and secure environment to grow in, where they feel safe, supported and comforted, which every child deserves.
My special interests involve working with adults and children equally and supporting individuals who live with anxiety and depression, highlighting self worth and striving towards building confidence. Having completed training in Person Centred Therapy and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, and currently training in the modality of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, I aim to use the skills and techniques I have acquired and will further work on acquiring, to assist in providing support and safety.
Being a counsellor at Woodend Primary School, I will provide an environment which allows the safety and security of children. My role as a counsellor will look at allowing a space for children, safe enough to talk about anything they feel they need to talk about, while being supported by me.
I believe in the power of having a safe place/person to be able to go to, as it can be empowering and comforting. In doing this, I hope I will be able to provide my skills to the community of Woodend Primary School, to assist in equipping children with skills to enhance their school and personal lives for a brighter and better future.
I am available at the school every Friday and am looking forward to working with students, parents and staff at Woodend Primary School. Details about referral to my service are available here.
Kind regards
Asmitha
