Reconciliation Week 2022

by | Jun 3, 2022

This week is National Reconciliation Week, a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Across our school, students have participated in a range of activities this week to celebrate this important message.

In room 4, some of our youngest students completed this shared artwork, learning about the importance of ‘walking side by side’ towards Reconciliation.

Year 5/6 classes are developing their understanding of Aboriginal cultural knowledge, beliefs and practices by researching and creating books about Aboriginal people who have made significant contributions to their chosen fields.

These beautiful artworks were made by students from room 29, in the style of Aboriginal Artist and proud Bundjalung woman, Bronwyn Bancroft.

Our library has featured Aboriginal authors on the New Book Shelf this week and our librarian, Felicity Humphries, shared Somebody’s Land by Adam Goodes and Ellie Laing with our Early Years classes in their Library visits this week.

In room 16, students discussed the significance and history of Sorry Day and the Prime Minister’s apology. The class read picture books, exploring concepts including the Stolen Generation, Land Rights including Terra Nullius and the significance of Welcome to Country. Students recognised Mabo day on the 3rd of June by decorating “Hands of Reconciliation”.

Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
