Following the events of the weekend, your child/ren may ask questions ? To help, there are a couple of fact sheets from CAMHS in relation to trauma. They appear at the end of this blogpost. As they are quite large, it may help to open them in a new Tab if asked.
How to help a child who has witnessed a traumatic event:
- Ensure children/adolescent are safe and that their basic needs are met
- Allow them to be sad and cry
- Let them talk, write, draw pictures about the event and their feelings and validate their feelings
- Limit their exposure to repetitive news reports about the traumatic event/s.
